SYMPTOMS

When you work on a document that is protected for annotations and that contains field codes (specifically the following fields: PAGE, SEQ, STYLEREF, INDEX (single column), TOC, and DATE), the following symptoms will appear:

The field code results will revise continuously. If revision marking is turned on, the field codes may appear with strikethrough or underline marks.

The number of pages in the document may rapidly increase, and the page size may appear to change to accommodate the revised fields.

This behavior is most noticeable in larger documents when you switch to, or work in, print preview or page layout view. In both page layout and normal views, the status bar may indicate the page numbers incrementing as the document is repaginated.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUNDS

Method 1:

From the Tools menu, choose Unprotect Document.

Enter the password and choose OK. Edit the document.

Method 2: Use the following macro to unprotect the document, allow the user to give the password, print the document, and protect it again for annotations.

Method 3: Unlink the fields before protecting the document. The drawback to this is that once the fields are unlinked, they become normal text and they can no longer be updated.
