To locate the Smart Quotes option in Word 6.0 for the Macintosh, choose AutoCorrect from the Tools menu. The option is called:

Change 'Straight Quotes' to 'Smart Quotes'

Select this option to turn smart quotes on, or clear the option to turn them off.

(In Word versions 4.x and 5.x for the Macintosh, the Smart Quotes option is located in the Tools Preferences dialog box, under the General category.)

MORE INFORMATION

"Smart quotes" are also called "curly" quotation marks or typesetters' quotation marks.

If you want to change straight quotation marks to smart quotes in an existing document, do the following:

  1. From the Format menu, choose AutoFormat.

  2. Choose the Options button.

  3. Under Replace, select the Straight Quotes With Smart Quotes option and choose OK.

  4. In the Format AutoFormat dialog box, choose OK. Word reformats your document, then prompts you to accept, reject, or modify the changes.
