    • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.x, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, 6.x

    SUMMARY

It is possible to make a screen capture on a Macintosh, extract only a part of it, and then paste it into a Microsoft Word document.

    MORE INFORMATION

The following steps explain how to take a screen shot in System 7.x, edit it in TeachText (called SimpleText in System 7.1.2 and later), and paste it into a Word document.

To make a screen shot in System 7.x:

    1. Press COMMAND+SHIFT+3. Your Macintosh should make a clicking sound as if a camera were taking a picture. This action creates a PICT graphic, which is named "Picture X" and is stored on the root level of the hard disk.

TeachText requires a larger memory allocation than its default to open PICT graphic files--this allocation should be increased to 1024K. To allocate 1024K to TeachText:
    1. Click once on the TeachText icon in the Finder.
    2. From the File menu, choose Get Info.
    3. For Preferred Size type "1024" (without the quotation marks). Click the Close button to close the window.

Now open the PICT graphic in TeachText:
    1. Launch TeachText. Close the blank file on the screen.
    2. From the File menu, choose Open. Locate "Picture X" and click Open.
    3. Using the cross-hairs, click and drag over the part of the graphic you
          want to paste into Word.

    4. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.
    5. Go back to Microsoft Word, place your insertion point in your Word document and choose Paste from the Edit menu.
