PUB: Superscript Sizing in Publisher 2.0

Q118760

------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - Microsoft Publisher 97 - Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95, version 3.0 - Microsoft Publisher for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a ------------------------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY ======= If you insert a superscript character at the beginning and end of a word, the superscripts may not share a common baseline and size. The superscript position and point size in Publisher is completely dependent on the point size of the preceding character. If there is no preceding character, it defaults to 6 points. For example, to see the same height of the superscript characters positioned before and after a 12-point character, a 12-point character must precede the first superscript character. A space, in this case, qualifies as a character. STEPS TO REPRODUCE ================== 1. Open or switch to Microsoft Publisher. 2. Start with a blank page and create a text frame. 3. Type at least three characters into the text frame. 4. Double-click the word to select all the characters. 5. On the Format menu, click Character. 6. Change the formatting to superscript and click OK. 7. Click after the first character. 8. Hold down the SHIFT key and press the RIGHT ARROW KEY. 9. On the Format menu, click Character. 10. Change the formatting from superscript to normal and click OK. The superscript characters at the beginning and end of the word will have a different baseline and size. WORKAROUND ========== If you need to place a superscript character at the beginning of a paragraph but you cannot add a space, use the following workaround: 1. Click in front of the initial superscript character. 2. Press CTRL+HYPHEN. 3. Press SHIFT+LEFT ARROW. 4. On the Format menu, click Character. 5. Change the formatting from Superscript to Normal and click OK. This inserts an optional nondisplaying hyphen with the correct font size and format, and adjusts the initial superscript setting to match the trailing superscript.
