Shading Does Not Print Correctly on Apple Color Printer

Last reviewed: August 4, 1997
Article ID: Q118774
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1, 6.0

SYMPTOMS

Shading applied to text in a Word 5.x or 6.0 for the Macintosh document may not print at all or may print at 100 percent shading (black) to the Apple Color Printer. The problem occurs when the Black & White Image option is selected rather than the Color/Grayscale option.

CAUSE

When Black & White is selected, the Apple Color printer rounds the shading percentage down to 0 percent or up to 100 percent where 50 percent is the cut-off value. When Color/Grayscale is selected, the Apple Color printer will print the shading correctly, provided the shading gradient is over 2.5 percent. This behavior is by design.

RESOLUTION

When printing shading, select the Color/Grayscale option. (To locate this option, choose Print from the File menu.)
