The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you delete a custom submenu item from the Toolbar shortcut menu using the Delete method in a Visual Basic, Applications Edition, procedure, one of the following occurs:

  • In Microsoft Excel for Windows, your computer stops responding.
  • In Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, you receive the following error message:

          Run-time error '1004':

          Delete method of MenuItem class failed

CAUSE

This behavior only occurs when you delete a custom submenu item from the Toolbar shortcut menu, (one that you have added to the shortcut menu). This problem does not occur with any of the other shortcut menus. This is also not a problem when you delete a standard menu item from the Toolbar shortcut menu.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this problem when you delete a custom submenu item from the Toolbar shortcut menu, delete the menu item that contains the submenu item, and then add the menu item, and any additional submenu items again. The following is an example of this method.

   Sub Delete_New_Menu()
      ' Instead of deleting the submenu item "new sub" on the menu "new"
      ' Delete the menu "new" and then add it back
      ShortcutMenus(xlToolbar).MenuItems("new").Delete
      Dim x as Object
      Set x = ShortcutMenus(xlToolbar).MenuItems.AddMenu(Caption:="new")
      ' Optionally, add new submenu item "new sub2"
      x.MenuItems.Add Caption:="new sub2"
   End Sub

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
