MXL5: Closing Find File Dialog Box Takes a Long Time

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q119319
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you use the Find File feature and you choose Close, returning to Microsoft Excel may take longer that you expect.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the search returns fewer than 100 files. If 100 or fewer files are found using the Find File feature, the resulting list of files is saved when you close the Find File dialog box. The time that it takes to save this list of files is the amount of time that it takes to close the Find dialog box.

When more than 100 files are found, the list of files is not saved, and the Find File dialog box is closed very quickly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

The first time you choose the Find File command from the File menu, the Search dialog box appears. The files that meet the search criteria are listed in the Find File dialog box, and the Search Results file is written when you close this dialog box. The next time you use Find File, the list of previously found files appears in the Find File dialog box, from the Search Results file. This file is located in the Preferences:Microsoft Find File folder.
