PRJ: Importing Resources with Units Creates Multiple Resources

The information in this article applies to:


SYMPTOMS

When task information is imported or copied into Microsoft Project, duplicate resources may be created.


CAUSE

Resources are duplicated if there is a space between the resource name and the unit, and the resource is assigned to more than one task.


WORKAROUND

Remove all spaces between the resource name and the unit before importing the task information into Microsoft Project.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior:

  1. Enter the following into a Microsoft Excel worksheet:

    (Note space between Bob and [units].)


  2. 
        |    A    |     B
    ---------------------------
     1  | Task1   |   Bob [.3]
     2  | Task2   |   Bob [.4] 
  3. Select cells A1 through B2. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.


  4. In Microsoft Project 4.0, from the View menu choose Table, More Tables and choose New. Create a the following table:

       Field Name      Align    Width    Title
       ----------      -----    -----    -----
       ID              Right    10
       NAME            Right    10
       RESOURCE NAMES  Right    10 
  6. Choose OK and the choose Apply.


  7. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.


  8. From the View menu, choose Resource Sheet.


RESULT: The resource Bob will be listed twice.

EXPECTED: The resource Bob should only be listed once.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
