PRJ4: Cost Calculated Incorrectly for Resource with Few Hours |
Q119349
The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Project for Windows, version 4.0
-
Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, version 4.0
SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when a resource is assigned a small number of work
hours and a large amount of cost, the cost of the resource may be calculated incorrectly.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because of the way Microsoft Project rounds numbers.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, do either of the following:
- From the Options menu, choose Tools. Select the
View tab and change the Decimal Digits to 0
(zero).
NOTE: This workaround alters only the way the number is
displayed. The value is still stored with the decimal places, which
may result in more calculation errors later on.
-or-
- Change the task to a Fixed Duration. Then change the
Units of the resource to 0 (zero). With the resource
applied at 0 Units, you can change the cost of the resource on the
task to $168.00.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
Steps to Reproduce Behavior
- Enter a 1 day duration task.
- Assign resource "R1" to the task at 1 Unit.
- Change the Standard Rate of the Resource to
$100.00/h.
- Note the Cost of the task is $800.00 which is correct.
- Change the Work of the resource to 1.68h.
NOTE: The Cost of the task is calculated incorrectly to $168.33 (the correct cost is $168.00).
Microsoft Project calculates the cost as follows:
- $100.00/h = $1.666666666/m ($100.00/h / 60 minutes)
- 1.68h = 101 minutes (1.68h * 60 minutes = 100.8 which rounds up to
101)
- $1.666666666/m * 101 minutes = $168.333333333 which rounds to
$168.33
