The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSIn the versions of Microsoft Excel mentioned above, if you attempt to define a local name on a sheet whose name contains an exclamation point (!), you may receive a general protection (GP) fault. If you are using Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, a type 1 (bus) error will occur.
WORKAROUNDTo prevent this GP fault from occurring, use the OK button rather than the Add button in the Define Name dialog box when you initially define the name. Selecting the Add button will not cause the GP Fault to occur if the name already exists. However, the name will appear incorrectly in the list of workbook names for as long as the Define Name dialog box is displayed on the screen.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
MORE INFORMATIONLocal names in Microsoft Excel version 5.0 use the following syntax:
<Sheet name>!<Name component>For example, a local name defined on a sheet called "Sales" might look like this:
Sales!QuarterlyResultsIf the sheet name itself contains an exclamation point (for example, if the sheet's name is "Hello! There"), a local name defined on that sheet might look like this:
Hello! There!FriendAttempting to define a name with such an appearance will cause a GP Fault if you use the Add button in the Define Name dialog box when you initially define the name.
