• Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

You receive a general protection (GP) fault when you open a file saved as a Microsoft Excel 5.0 workbook that originated from Quattro Pro for DOS, version 4.0 (WQ1).

CAUSE

This problem occurs with any Quattro Pro version 4.0 for DOS file that contains more than one synched window.

WORKAROUND

Do one of the following to eliminate the GP fault error message:

Open the original Quattro Pro file in Microsoft Excel version 5.0 and close the extra windows of the worksheet by doing the following:

1. Activate the window that has the colon 1 in the name (that is, FILENAME.:1).



2. From the Control Menu of the window, choose Close. Repeat this step on the active window (FILENAME followed by a colon) until only one window of the spreadsheet is open (FILENAME not followed by a colon).



3. From the File menu, choose Save As. Change the Save File As Type option to Microsoft Excel Workbook.

   Open the original file in Quattro Pro for DOS and close the second window of the worksheet or disable the Sync option.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel version 5.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
