SYMPTOMS
========
When you print a legal-sized page to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4/4M
printer using a PostScript printer driver, the printer cuts off the
text and objects and creates a margin greater than expected. Instead
of the expected .25-inch to .33-inch margins, the margins are much larger,
and nothing prints outside these larger margins.
RESOLUTION
==========
On the printer, set Page Protection to Legal.
To change the Page Protection setting on the printer, follow these
steps:
1. Locate the LCD printer menu display on the printer.
2. Press the Online button to take the printer offline.
3. Press the Menu button until "Job Menu" appears in the display.
4. Press the Item button until "Page Protection" appears on the
display.
5. Press the + button until "Page Protection - Legal" appears
on the display. Press the Enter button to accept the setting.
6. Press the Online button to return the printer to online status.
MORE INFORMATION
================
The printer is not able to print the .25-inch to .33-inch minimum
margins as expected because the printer is not reserving enough
memory for a legal page. The above steps outline the procedure
required to change the Page Protection setting on the printer (not
the Windows Control Panel) to Legal. The procedure forces the
printer to reserve enough memory for a full legal page. According to
Hewlett-Packard, this requirement is a result of an idiosyncrasy in
the Windows PostScript driver.
HP technical support also advises that you can leave the page
protection setting on Legal as long as out-of-memory errors do not
occur. If out-of-memory errors DO occur, and you are printing on
letter-sized paper, switch the page protection setting on the printer
back to Letter using the above outlined procedure.
NOTE: The Page Protection setting discussed in this article is the
same as the Page Protection option available when working with an
HPPCL driver in the Windows Control Panel. The difference is the
Windows PostScript driver does not provide a way to set Page
Protection within the driver interface. The changes must be made
through the printer's Control Panel Programmable menu.
The above information applies to the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4/4M.
Other HP 4 printers have different interfaces, so the steps to set the
page protection may be different from what is outlined above.
