PRJ4: Mail Error 32021 When Replying to Task Request

Q120602

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When a project user has an E-mail name that is a duplicate of part of another E-mail name, the recipient of a task request gets the following mail error when they reply to it:

An error occurred while sending mail: 32021.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do the following:

  1. Rename E-mail names to avoid ambiguous names that are duplicates or subsets of other names.

  2. If you open the Task Request Mail message again after getting the error, you will be able to reply without error this time. You will also avoid receiving error messages when you reply to an Update Request or a Task Update.

  3. Turn on the Global Address List from the postoffice (this may not always work).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Error 32021 is a Mail error message from the Visual Basic MAPI custom control. The error is "Ambiguous recipient, one or more recipient addresses are invalid," which means that the E-mail name is a duplicate or subset of another E-mail name. For example, an E-mail name of "Fred" will give an error if another E-mail name such as an alias called "Fred Direct Reports" exists.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Create mail users "demo" and "demo user" or some other names where one E-mail name is contained within another.

  2. Log on to mail as "demo".

  3. Start Microsoft Project.

  4. Enter a task, and assign a valid E-mail name as the resource.

  5. Save the file.

  6. From the Tools menu, choose Workgroup. Send the Task Request.

  7. Exit Microsoft Project.

  8. Start the resource's mail.

  9. Open the Task Request message, reply to it, and then send the message.

You will get the error message
"An error occurred while sending mail: 32021." No mail is sent to the originator, but the task is added to the task list in Schedule Plus.
