PRJ4: Update Project Method Reschedules Tasks

Q120704

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When a task has a constraint of Finish No Earlier Than (FNET) or Must Finish On (MFO), and you use the Update Project method (from the Tools menu, choose Tracking, and then choose Update Project), the task's Start and Finish dates can change.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this behavior turn off the Split In-Progress Tasks option. This option is found on the Schedule tab of the Options dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Enter two 5d tasks.

  2. Set a FNET constraint on the first task and an MFO on the second task. Do not enter a date (use the default finish date for the task).

  3. From the File menu, choose Summary Info, and change the current date to one day ahead.

  4. From the Tools menu, choose Tracking, and then choose Update Project.

  5. Leave the dialog box at the default of Update work as complete through x/xx/xx, and Set 0-100% complete.

  6. Choose the OK button.

NOTE: The Start of task 2 moves ahead 4 days. The Finish of task 1 moves ahead 4 days.

The Start of task 2 (MFO) moves ahead 4 days. The Finish of Task 2 does not move. The Gantt bar is only 1 day long, although duration is still 5d, and no Percent complete bar is drawn.
