Custom Toolbars Use Too Much Space Starting Word Minimized

SYMPTOMS

When you start Word for Windows in the minimized state, if you load several custom toolbars, the toolbars appear one under the other (as if on their own lines) when you maximize Word. This happens even when there is enough room for the toolbars to dock side-by-side.

If you have several toolbars, they may obscure the entire working area (this happens more frequently if you are using the Large Buttons setting and a low-resolution Windows video driver).

WORKAROUNDS

Method 1: Start Word in the maximized state by doing the following:

  1. In Windows Program Manager, select your Word program icon.


  2. From the File menu, choose Properties.


  3. Clear the Run Minimized option so there is no X in the box next to it, and then choose OK.


Method 2: If you want to start Word in the minimized state, write a global AutoExec macro that uses the AppMinimize WordBasic command to minimize Word when you start the application. If you use this method, you should also clear the Run Minimized option in Program Manager (see Method 1 for instructions).
