ErrMsg: Word Cannot Start Examples and Demos

Last reviewed: August 4, 1997
Article ID: Q120856
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

If you choose Examples And Demos or Quick Preview from the Help menu, one the following error messages occurs in Word for the Macintosh if your computer does not have a HyperCard:

Word cannot start Examples and Demos.
   Word cannot start Quick Preview.

CAUSE

The above error message does not explain that the Word examples and demonstrations (the tutorial) do not run unless a HyperCard is installed in your Macintosh. If you choose the Help button in the error message dialog box, Word displays a "No Help available" message, which also does not explain why the error occurred.

When you install the examples and demonstrations on a computer with no HyperCard, Word Setup does not notify you that you cannot run the examples and demonstrations unless you install a HyperCard.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
