Help for Fields: Word Help Contents Displayed Instead

Last reviewed: August 4, 1997
Article ID: Q120879
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word for Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Help key (F1) to access context-sensitive help for the following inserted fields, the Office Assistant displays a prompt or general field help (or the Word Help Contents screen is displayed in Word 6.x and 7.x) instead of the context help screen:

   PRIVATE
   RD (6.x only)
   TA (6.x only)
   TC (6.x only)
   XE

WORKAROUNDS

To access Help for all fields, including those on the above list, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: On the Insert menu, click Fields, select the field in the

Field Names list, and press F1.

Method 2: Use the Field Types Reference in Help. To locate the reference,
double-click the Help button on the Standard toolbar, and then
type "fields, type of" (without the quotation marks). Go to Field
Types and Switches, and click Field Types.

Method 3: In Word for the Macintosh, you can access context-sensitive help
by using the HELP key on the extended ADB Keyboard or by using
COMMAND+? on the standard Apple Macintosh ADB keyboard.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Word listed above. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
