WD6X: Document Loses Heading Numbering Formatting |
Q120977
Sometimes heading numbering formatting disappears from a Word document.
Word either replaces some heading numbering with numbered list formatting
or removes the numbering altogether. Similarly, the document does not
contain any other formatting changes you applied to the heading styles.
The exception is that Word does update heading paragraphs for which you
have not modified the heading style.
This problem occurs if the Automatically Update Document Styles option is selected when the document is saved and if the Normal.dot template contains no numbering information for the Heading styles.
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 95 for Windows and Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
When you click Heading Numbering on the Format menu, the changes are
made to the Heading styles. If the Heading styles are defined in
Normal.dot, they will replace the Heading style definitions in the
document.
The Automatically Update Document Styles feature allows you to ensure that
changes that are made to the global template are reflected in the document.
It is useful for documents that must conform to a standardized template.
