SYMPTOMS

Microsoft OS/2 version 1.3 does not install successfully on a Compaq Prosignia VS with a Maxtor MXT-540S SCSI hard-drive.

CAUSE

The problem occurs when the Maxtor MXT-540S SCSI hard-drive is connected to Compaq's on-board SCSI controller with the NCR-53C710 chipset. This controller works only with Compaq-provided hard-drives, and should not be used as a standard SCSI interface.

RESOLUTION

In order to correct this problem:

  1. Disable the on-board SCSI controller (NCR-53C710) and use one of the supported external SCSI controllers.
  2. Upgrade to Compaq's SCSI controller with the NCR-53C870 chipset. Contact Compaq Technical Support at (800) 652-6672.
