    SYMPTOMS

    When you save a document in Microsoft Excel version 5.0 that had been previously saved in the Microsoft Excel version 4.0 file format, the size of the file may increase.

    CAUSE

    The file size increases because Microsoft Excel version 5.0 file format requires additional bytes for the font, setup, and format (FMT) records. This increase in file size occurs even if the file is saved out in the Microsoft Excel version 4.0 file format.
