MXL5: Excel Starts and Then Quits Without Error Message

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Excel version 5.0 on an Apple Power Macintosh, you may see the zoom rectangle zoom out (to indicate that the program is starting) and then zoom back in (indicating that the program quit), but you do not receive an error message indicating why the program is not started.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:


RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem, use Extension Manager to enable the PowerPC Finder Update extension. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the "System Folder:Control Panels" folder on your hard disk.


  2. Double-click the Extensions Manager icon.


  3. Click to select (check) PowerPC Finder Update.


  4. Close Extensions Manager.


  5. Click Restart on the Special menu.
