XL5: Chart Legend And Axis Font Changes After Chart Saved

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, if you have changed the default standard font, and you create a chart, the font for the chart text (axis text, legend text) changes back to the previous default standard font when you save, close, and open the chart again.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs only if you create and save a workbook, change the default standard font, start Microsoft Excel again, and then create a chart in the workbook. In other words, this behavior occurs when the workbook was created using a different standard font than the standard font that was used when the chart was created.

Note that this problem does not occur with an embedded chart.


WORKAROUND

To change the chart legend to the current standard font, do the following:

  1. Select the chart legend that you want to change.


  2. From the Format menu, choose Selected Legend.


  3. In the Format Legend dialog box, select the Font tab. Select the desired font, font style, and size, and choose OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel version 5.0c.


MORE INFORMATION

When you change the standard font, using the General tab of the Options dialog box (Tools menu), a dialog box with the following message appears:

You must quit and then restart Microsoft Excel before your changes to the standard font will take effect.
When you restart Microsoft Excel, only new workbooks that you create use the new standard font. Workbooks that you created before you changed the standard font are not affected. However, when you create a chart in either a new workbook, or a workbook that was saved previous to the standard font change, the chart axis text and legend text are formatted with the current standard font.

The problem described above occurs when you insert a chart in a workbook that was saved previous to the standard font change. When you close and open the workbook again, the chart text is changed to the previous standard font instead of the current standard font.
