MXL5: Template Filenames Don't Appear in File Open Dialog Box

Last reviewed: March 31, 1997

The information in this article applies to:

- Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0 for the Macintosh, files that are saved as templates are not visible in the Open dialog box (from the file menu, choose Open) when the List Files Of Type box is set to Templates.

CAUSE

When you choose Open from the File menu, and specify to list template files, the Open dialog box displays all files with a "file type" of Template. However, when you save a file as a template, Microsoft Excel version 5.0 does not set the file type attribute of the template; therefore, the Open dialog box does not display any files.

WORKAROUND

To open templates from the Open dialog box, select any of the following options in the List Files Of Type box:

   All Files
   Readable Files
   Microsoft Excel Files
   Workbooks

Your templates will be visible.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not affect the functionality of templates in Microsoft Excel version 5.0. Templates will still behave in the correct manner: the only problem is that they will not appear in the Open dialog box.
