SUMMARY

Works for Windows allows you create multiple custom templates. These templates can be shared with other Works users, whether they are standalone users or on a network. However, because Works creates separate configuration files for each Works user on a network, each user must add the custom template to his or her own Works installation to use the shared template file.

To share a template with another Works 3.0 for Windows user, use the template to create a new document, and then save that new document to a floppy disk or a shared directory on the network. To use the file as a template, each user then must separately open the file in his or her instance of Works, and resave the file as a template.

To share a template with another Works user, follow the steps below:

Save the Existing Template as a Document

  1. From the File menu, choose Templates.
  2. Choose the Custom template group and category.
  3. Choose the desired template and select the OK button.
  4. From the File menu, choose Save As.
  5. Change to the drive and directory (shared directory if on a network) where the file is to be saved. Type a filename, and choose OK to save the file in the normal format.

Save the Document as a Template on the New Machine

  1. From your instance of Works, open the document you want to use as a template.
  2. From the File menu, choose Save As.
  3. Choose the Template button.
  4. Enter a name for the new template, and choose the OK button.

    If the template name already exists, you will need to choose whether or not to replace the existing template at this point.
The new template will now be available in your Custom group of templates.

The template files are referenced in each user's MSWORKS3.INI file, which is updated when a file is saved as a template. The actual template files are stored in subdirectories named WKSTMPL. With a network installation of Works, the default templates are stored in the shared Works directory (for example, X:\MSWORKS\WKSTMPL) and the custom template files are stored in the user's Windows directory (for example, C:\WINDOWS\WKSTMPL). Each user's custom template files must be stored separately from the default templates, and will not be recognized if moved to the shared directory.
