Application Error Starting Spelling Checker

The information in this article applies to:


SYMPTOMS

You receive one of the following application errors when you start the spelling checker:

WINWORD.EXE - Application Error

The instruction at "0x4003e98c" referenced memory at "0x00000224".
The memory could not be "read".
-or-
WINWORD.EXE - Application Error

The Exception Illegal Instruction
An attempt was made to execute an illegal instruction.
(0xc000001d) occurred in the application at location 0x77f98280.


CAUSE

These error messages occur when the spelling checker file (MSSP232.DLL) is installed in a location referenced by a path that is longer than 127 characters.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word version 6.0 for Windows NT. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
