All 16-bit Applications Return Zero Error Levels

SYMPTOMS

The value returned to the operating system by a 16-bit application when it closes is called an error level. Error levels are used by batch files under MS-DOS to test for exit conditions and branch to different code blocks depending on the value returned. This same functionality exists under Windows NT 3.1. However, after you load Client Services for NetWare error levels returned by closing 16-bit applications are always zero.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. A fix to this problem is in development, but has not been regression-tested and may be destabilizing in production environments. Microsoft does not recommend implementing this fix at this time.
