"File Is Not a Works for Windows Document" Opening 3.0 File |
Q122393
If both the Works 2.0 and Works 3.0 for Windows converters are installed,
one of the following will occur when you try to open a Works 3.0 file:
followed by:"File is not a Works for Windows document"
"Word cannot open the document. <path\filename>"
Word is not able to properly differentiate between the Works formats during the conversion. Word incorrectly associates the Works 2.0 recognition classname "MSWorksWin" with a Works 3.0 file. The correct classname for a Works 3.0 document is "MSWorks3Win."
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word versions 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.0c for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
This problem only occurs with documents originally created in Works 3.0 for
Windows. The problem does not occur with documents originally saved in
Works 3.0 for Windows format from Word.
Word defaults to the Works 2.0 converter if both the Works 2.0 and Works
3.0 converters are installed. The order of the conversion filter entries in
WIN.INI or WINWORD6.INI make no difference to the outcome.
Microsoft Publisher for Windows also uses the wrong converter when you use
the File Import Text option. The same workarounds referenced above are
applicable to Publisher.
This problem does not occur in Word versions 2.0x.
