"Not Enough Memory..." Saving from WinWord 6.0 as WinWord 2.x

SYMPTOMS

If a Word 6.x for Windows document containing a significant number of bookmarks is saved as Word for Windows 2.x format, the following error message may be received:

Not enough memory to complete operation.
Alternatively, Word 6.0 may hang (stop responding) during the save process.


CAUSE

This error occurs because the amount of memory the Word 2.0 for Windows converter allocates to conversion of bookmarks is relatively limited. For example, a large table of contents (generated by a TOC field) in a Word 6.0 document may generate this problem because Word 6.0 automatically adds a bookmark and a goto button to all the page numbers in a table of contents.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with the Word 2.0 for Windows converter WORDWIN2.CNV provided with Word 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.0c for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post additional information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available. This is not an issue in Word 6.0 for Windows NT because memory is allocated differently by converters under Windows NT.

WORKAROUNDS

Method 1

Open documents into Word 2.0 using the Word 6.0 for Windows converter. For information on how to obtain this converter, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Method 2

Save affected documents from Word 6.0 in Rich Text Format (RTF) and open from RTF format into Word 2.0. To do so, complete the following steps:

  1. Choose Save As from the Word 6.0 File menu.


  2. From the Save File As Type list, select Rich Text Format.


  3. Enter a new name (if desired) and choose the OK button.


NOTE: Method 1 may provide better overall format retention because the Word 6.0 for Windows converter (for Word 2.x for Windows users) is tailored specifically to translate Word 6.0 features to Word 2.0 for Windows equivalents.
