XL: Cannot Use Cell Note Tool on Protected Sheet

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the Attach Note tool on a protected worksheet, you will receive the following error message:

   Cannot use that command on a protected sheet

WORKAROUNDS

To work around this problem, follow the appropriate procedure below.

If objects in the sheet do not need to be protected

  • When you protect the sheet, clear the Objects check box in the Protect Sheet dialog box. This will allow you to use the Attach Note tool to access notes in cells.

If objects in the sheet must be protected

To access notes in cells when you are working in a protected sheet and the objects ARE protected, do either of the following:

  • From the Insert menu, choose Note.

    -or-

  • Press SHIFT+F2.
