SUMMARY

To open a Word 6.0 or 7.0 for Windows document or a Word 6.0 for the Macintosh document into Word 5.x for the Macintosh, you must install the "Word 6.0 for Windows&Macintosh" converter.

This converter, although titled "Word 6.0 for Windows&Macintosh", is the correct converter to use when converting Word 7.0 files. In addition, the converter displays the message "Converting Word 6.0 for Windows&Macintosh file".

If you have a complete installation of Word 6.0 for the Macintosh on the same computer as you have Word 5.x, the converter is already available to you. To install the converter to use with Word 5.x, see the installation section below.

If you do not have Word 6.0 for the Macintosh, you need to order or download the Word 6.x/7.0 for Windows&Macintosh converter kit. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

Installing the Word 6.x/7.0 for Windows&Macintosh Converter

  1. If a complete installation of Word 6.0 exists on the same computer as Word 5.x, copy the "Word 6.0 for Windows&Macintosh" file from the Microsoft folder existing at the same level as the Word 6.0 folder to the Word Commands folder in your Word 5.x folder.

If instead you selected the Typical option when you installed Word 6.0, run Word 6.0 Setup again and add the "Word 6.0 for Windows&Macintosh" converter, and repeat the procedure in the preceding paragraph.

If you obtained the Word 6.0 converter by ordering the converter kit on disk, insert that disk in your Macintosh disk drive and copy the file named "Word 6.0 for Windows&Macintosh" to the Word Commands folder in your Word 5.x folder.

If you downloaded the converter from an online service, extract the compressed file you downloaded and copy the file "Word 6.0 for Windows&Macintosh" to the Word Commands folder in your Word 5.x folder.

  2. Quit and restart Word 5.x.

  3. Choose to open a Word 6.0 or 7.0 for Windows or a Word 6.0 for the Macintosh document.

The document should open successfully. The converter is now installed, and remains installed for all future Word sessions.

Once the converter is installed, Word 6.0 and 7.0 documents may not appear as readable files in the File Open dialog box, but you can open them successfully.

If you ordered the converter using the Supplemental Offers coupon included in your Word 6.0 for the Macintosh package or by contacting Microsoft Product Support Services, you may have received a converter that can only read Word 6.0 for Windows documents. This is only the case if the converter you received contains a slash (/) in its name instead of an ampersand (&).

If you did receive the incorrect converter, contact Microsoft Product Support Services at (425) 635-7200 to receive a replacement, or see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base
