Excel: Dialog Sheet Control Disabled If an Object Is Behind It

Last reviewed: September 13, 1996
Article ID: Q123187
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0,5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows NT, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, if a control overlaps a drawing object on a dialog sheet, the control may not be fully enabled.

For example, if you use pictures or shapes for the background design of a dialog box, and one of the pictures overlaps a button, the button may not be enabled when you display the dialog box. Depending on how much of the button overlaps the picture, and depending on the where on the button you click, the button may or may not perform the expected action.

Note that you can still use the keyboard to choose controls in the dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this behavior, make sure that controls that you want enabled do not overlap drawing objects and pictures on the dialog box.
