Word Index Ignores Nested Fields in Index Entry

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

If you insert (nest) a display field into an index entry in Word version 1.x or 2.x for Windows, the field will not be included in the index entry of the compiled index. AUTONUM, EQ, and SYMBOL fields are examples of display fields.

Word 6.x does allow for these nested display fields to be displayed. However, if a display field is at the beginning of an XE (index entry) field, the display field will not be included in the index.

WORKAROUND

To display the nested field in the index entry, text must be entered before the field. For example, if you wanted an entry like the following in the index

   1/2 the speed of light, 1 (using the EQ field to
                                    create the fraction)

your XE field would look like the following:

   { XE " { EQ \f(1,2) } the speed of light" }

Note: There is an extra space before the left brace for the EQ field. Without the space, the result of the EQ field is ignored and only the remaining text of the entry is included in the compiled index.
