MS Query Err Msg: Memory Allocation Error

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If you are using Microsoft Query version 1.0 for Windows with Microsoft Access version 1.0 tables, and you attempt to join two tables, you may receive the following error message:

[Microsoft][ODBC Single-Tier Driver]Memory Allocation Error


CAUSE

This problem occurs if you add a smaller table before you add the largest table.

Example

Table 1 contains 3,025 records and 31 fields, and Table 2 contains 1,515 records and 14 fields. Three fields, present in both tables, are the primary indexes.

If you add Table 2 (the smaller table) and then add Table 1 (the larger table), and you then perform the join, you receive the error message.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add the largest table first, then add the smaller table.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Query for Windows version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
