MXL5: Problem Choosing Help While Worksheet Object Active

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q124495
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

If you choose Office Help from the Microsoft Office Manager menu while a Microsoft Excel 5.0 Worksheet object is active in another application, the object may close and you may be unable to edit it.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you are editing a formula in a worksheet object, and a dialog box is active at the time that you choose Office Help from the Microsoft Office Manager menu. For example, if you are editing a worksheet object in Microsoft Word, and you choose the function button on the Formula bar to activate the Function Wizard dialog box, if you choose the Office Help command from the Microsoft Office Manager menu, the worksheet object closes, and you can no longer edit the object in Microsoft Word.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this behavior, do not run a Help file if a dialog box is open while you are editing a formula in a Microsoft Excel object. Instead, close the dialog box before you run the Help file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
