Insert Object Icon Not Displayed if Links Are Not Updated

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you reopen a workbook that contains an object, and you attempt to insert a new object onto the worksheet that contains the object, an empty box is displayed for the new object.

CAUSE

This problem occurs under the following conditions:

  • When you create the initial workbook and insert the first object, you select both the Link To File and the Display As Icon check boxes in the Object dialog box.

    -and-

  • When you reopen the workbook, you choose not to reestablish links.

    -and-

  • When you insert the new object, you click Link To File in the Object dialog box.

RESOLUTION

To avoid this problem, reestablish links when you reopen the file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
