The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSIn Microsoft Excel version 4.0 for the Macintosh, if you delete the default footer code (Page &P) from the center section of the footer, the page number will not be displayed in print preview. If you return the &P to the center section of the footer by choosing the Page Number button, &P will be displayed in bold. However, you be unable to view the page number on the printout or in print preview.
CAUSEWhen you delete the default center section footer code (Page &P), the font for the center section is set to Chicago with a size of zero (0). So, when the page code is put back into the center section, the page number will not be displayed, even though it appears in the footer in Page Setup. The verify the font, select page code in the footer, and then select the font button to bring up the Font dialog box.
WORKAROUNDSTo reset the page number in the center section, do either of the following: Method 1: If the page number code is in the center section box:
a. From the File menu, choose Page setup.
b. In the Page Setup dialog box, click the Footer Button.
c. Select the center section of the footer.
d. Select the &P, and choose the font button.
This will take you to the font dialog box.
e. In the font dialog box, select the Normal Font check box.
This will reset the font to Geneva (or whatever font you have
set for your Normal font).
f. Choose OK twice.
g. From the File menu, choose Print Preview.
The page number should now be displayed as expected.
Method 2: If the page number code is not in the center section box:
a. From the File menu, choose Page setup.
b. In the Page Setup dialog box, click the Footer Button.
c. Select the center section of the footer.
d. Type "&P" (without the quotation marks) in the center
section.
e. Choose OK twice.
f. From the File menu, choose Print Preview.
The page number should now be displayed.
