Publisher 2.0: Some WPG Files Don't Print If Cropped

Q124827

------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - Microsoft Publisher versions 2.0, 2.0a ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS ======== If you import a WordPerfect Graphics (WPG) graphic into Publisher 2.0 and crop it, the image may not print. This problem occurs if the graphic is bitmap based and black-and-white. CAUSE ===== The WPG file format supports both bitmap "paint" graphics and vector "draw" graphics. Color-bitmap-type WPG images and all vector-based WPG images print correctly after being cropped. STATUS ====== Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available. WORKAROUND ========== Method 1: Convert Graphics to TIFF or PCX ----------------------------------------- If you have software that you can use to convert graphics file formats, you can convert your WordPerfect Graphics file to a format such as TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) or PCX (Z-Soft Publisher's Paintbrush format). If you import black-and-white TIFF or PCX images into Publisher and crop them, they will print. Method 2: Use "Electronic Whiteout" ----------------------------------- If you can't convert your WordPerfect Graphic into another file format, you can omit unwanted portions of the image by drawing shapes using Publisher's drawing tools on top of the image. This method is called "electronic whiteout." For example, if you want the left 1 inch of your WPG image to not print, do the following: 1. Draw a rectangle using Publisher's Rectangle Tool. The rectangle should cover the left 1 inch of your image. 2. With the rectangle selected, click the Shadow button on the top toolbar. This will fill the rectangle with white and give it a shadow. 3. Click the Shadow button again. This will remove the rectangle's shadow but will leave the solid white fill. 4. Click the Borders button. Choose None from the menu. Method 3: Once the Graphic Is Inserted into Publisher ----------------------------------------------------- 1. Go to Edit menu and choose Cut Picture Frame. 2. Go to the Edit menu and choose Insert Object. Then choose Microsoft Drawing and click OK. 3. Once in MS Draw, go to the Edit menu and choose Paste. 4. Click on File, choose Exit and Return. 5. Choose Yes to Update. The left 1 inch of your graphic will now be obscured without using Publisher's Cropping tool. It will now print correctly.
