Money: Account Value Is Different from the Sum of Total Column

The number in the Account Value box is the quantity of all of the investments multiplied by their respective current prices. So, for example, if you bought 100 shares of stock in the Widget Company at $1 per share, in a New investment account, the Total column would say $100 and the Account Value box would display the value $100. If you buy 100 more shares of the Widget Company stock at $2 per share, the account value would not equal the sum of the cost of the two investments. The Total column would have the values of $100 and $200, but the Account Value box would read $400. The Account Value box is taking the 200 shares you now own and multiplying them by the current stock price of $2 per share. So, the number in the Account Value box is the amount that you would receive if you sold all the shares you own at their current prices.
