Publisher Error Message: This Filename Is Not Valid
Publisher Error Message: This Filename Is Not Valid
Q124986
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Publisher for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
========
When you try to save a publication from Microsoft Publisher, you may
receive the following error message:
<FILENAME.PUB>
This filename is not valid.
This error may occur even if the filename you typed in is a valid MS-DOS
filename.
CAUSE
=====
This error will occur if there aren't enough available file locks to save
the file. It will also occur if the floppy disk or hard disk to which you
are saving the file is damaged.
STATUS
======
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Publisher versions 2.0 and
2.0a. This problem was corrected in Publisher version 3.0 for Windows 95.
RESOLUTION
==========
If you get this error, try saving the publication to a different drive or
floppy disk. NOTE: If you opened your publication from a floppy disk, you
will need to leave that disk in the drive; in this case, try saving to your
hard disk or to your other floppy disk drive.
If the error persists, increase the number of file locks available to your
system:
1. Open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (usually, C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT) in a text editor
such as Notepad.
2. Look for the line similar to
C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE
and add the following to it:
/F:5100 /L:500
The line should now be similar to:
C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /F:5100 /L:500
NOTE: If your SHARE.EXE line already has the /F and /L switches, change
the numbers after them to match the values given above.
3. Save the file and close the text editor.
4. Restart your computer. NOTE: This resolution results in the loss of any
unsaved changes in your publication, but it should prevent the error
from occurring in the future.
