Excel: Cannot Delete Pie Chart Label from "Exploded" Slice

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q125009
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

If you create a pie chart using Chart Wizard, where the selected pie chart is the third pie type (with one slice of the pie exploded) and the range of cells selected includes text labels, labels for the pie slices may appear inside the chart. This behavior occurs even though the third pie chart type does not include labels in its default type. Also, the label for the exploded slice cannot be selected, which means that you cannot delete it.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you select the range of cells and use the ChartWizard to create the chart. ChartWizard contains labels for the pie chart values (even though the third pie chart format is not supposed to contain chart labels). The labels appear because in Step 4 of 5 of Chart Wizard, there is an option to use the first column of data for chart labels and it is the default option.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do the following:

  1. Activate the chart.

  2. From the Gallery menu, choose Pie, and then select the first pie type from the 7 different types, and choose OK.

  3. From the Gallery menu, choose Pie and select the third pie type, and choose OK.

This will give you a chart with one pie slice exploded and no labels displayed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel, version 4.0. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel, version 5.0.
