MXL5: Type 1 Error/Hang Saving File with 32-Bit Addressing On

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 5.0, when you save a file in the Microsoft Excel Workbook file format on a Macintosh that has 32-bit addressing turned on, your computer may stop responding, or Microsoft Excel may close unexpectedly.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you entered a name that has 31 characters in the User Name box on the General tab of the Options dialog box, and the Prompt For Summary Info check box is selected. For example, if you enter the name "This is an extra loooooong name" in the User Name box, and you select the Prompt for Summary Info check box, this problem occurs when you save your workbook if 32-bit addressing is turned on.

Note that this problem does not occur on a Power Macintosh computer.

WORKAROUNDS

To avoid this problem, use either of the following methods:

Method 1

Enter a user name that has fewer than 31 characters. To change your user name, do the following:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. Click the General tab.


  3. In the User Name box, type a name that has fewer than 16 characters, and then click OK.


Method 2

Turn off the prompt for Summary Information by doing the following:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. Click the General tab.


  3. Clear the Prompt For Summary Info check box, and then click OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version 5.0a.
