MXL5: Macintosh/Power Macintosh Type Doesn't Install Both

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Excel from a network server, and the server installation is set up so that you can run Microsoft Excel from the server, only the Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh files or the Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh files are installed on your computer.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel. When you run the Microsoft Excel 5.0 Administrative Setup program, and you select the option that allows users to run Microsoft Excel from the server, you are also prompted to select an installation type. However, in this case, the Macintosh And Power Macintosh installation option does not allow a workstation to run EITHER Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh, OR Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh. Instead, if you choose this option during the Administrative Setup, when you perform a workstation installation to run Microsoft Excel from the server, the installation type that is installed is dependent on the type of computer that you are installing to.

For example, if you perform a workstation installation to run Microsoft Excel from the server on a Power Macintosh computer, only the Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh files are installed.

Note that this behavior differs from when you select the Macintosh And Power Macintosh option during Setup when you perform a Minimum, Complete/Custom, or Typical installation of Microsoft Excel. In this case, when you choose to run Microsoft Excel from your workstation, if you select the Macintosh And Power Macintosh installation option, the files for both installation types are installed to your computer so that you can run either Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, or Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh.

WORKAROUND

To run either Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, or Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh on a workstation, when you perform the server installation, you must select the option that allows users to install Microsoft Excel 5.0 from the server, rather than the option that allows users to run Microsoft Excel 5.0 from the server.
