WD: Page Numbers Reset in MacWord 5.x Files Opened in Word

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word 5.x for the Macintosh document in Microsoft Word 6.0 or later, page numbers that started at a number other than 1 are reset to Start At 1.


WORKAROUND

Save affected documents on the Macintosh in Rich Text Format (RTF) and open from Rich Text Format into Word 6.0. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the document in Word 5.x for the Macintosh.


  2. On the File menu, click Save As.


  3. Change the file name.


  4. In the Save File As Type list, change the file type to the "Interchange Format (RTF)" format.


After you open the document in Word, the starting page number will be correct.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Word version 6.0.1 for the Macintosh, but remains a problem in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
