MXL5: Remove All Doesn't Return Error if Excel is Running

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q125896
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

If you choose the Remove All button in the Microsoft Excel maintenance mode Setup program while Microsoft Excel is running, you do not receive an error message. Instead, any files that can't be removed because they are in use are moved to a "Replaced By Setup" folder in the Trash, or at the root level of the active volume.

CAUSE

This behavior only occurs if you start the Microsoft Excel Setup program in maintenance mode while Microsoft Excel is not running, and you then start Microsoft Excel before you choose the Remove All button. The behavior occurs because the Setup program checks to see if specific applications are running when you first run Setup, but it does not check again to see if files are in use when you choose the installation option buttons.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this behavior when you run Setup in maintenance mode, do not run another application while the Setup program is running.
