SGML: "Could Not Open the File..." During Setup

SYMPTOMS

When you are running a workstation copy of Word from a server that is read- only, and you attempt to install SGML Author, you receive error messages such as the following

Could not open the file named E:\WINWORD\SGMLCONV\AVEQ.DLL
where E: is the network drive on which Word is installed.


CAUSE

SGML Author Setup is attempting to install converters to the same directory as Word. Since the directory where Word is located is read-only, Setup cannot install the files.


RESOLUTION

Method 1

Change the network Word directory to read-write access.

Method 2

Temporarily change the server from read-only to read-write. Install SGML Author on the server, and then install a workstation copy of SGML Author.

The files will already be on the server, so Setup won't try to install them there.
