MXL5: Picture in Windows Excel Workbook Not Displayed

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q126252
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, when you open a Microsoft Excel version 5.0 for Windows workbook that contains a picture, the picture may not be displayed.

Additionally, if you save the file in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, the picture is not displayed when you open the file again in Microsoft Excel for Windows.

CAUSE

This behavior only occurs when you open a workbook that contains a fairly complex picture that you inserted as a picture or object in Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows. For example, if you insert a complex .WMF picture file in your worksheet using the Picture command in Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows, and you open the file in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, only the outline of the picture, and maybe a portion of the picture itself, is displayed.

WORKAROUND

To avoid losing pictures that you have inserted in a Microsoft Excel for Windows workbook when you open the file in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, do not save the file on the Macintosh, or save the file with a different filename.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
