MXL5: There Is Not Enough Space on Destination Volume

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q126298
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

When you perform an Administrative installation of Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0, you may receive the warning message:

There is not enough space on the following destination volume(s) to
install all of the options you've selected. Space Required is 10848K.

CAUSE

You receive this error message if you do not have enough free hard disk drive space on the workstation from which you are performing the Administrative installation and you make the following choices during Setup:

  • Allow users to run Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0 from the server

    -and-

  • Install Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh and Power Macintosh

The dialog box that contains the error message lists the volume from which you are performing the installation, the space required on the volume, the space available on the volume, and the additional space needed on the volume.

Note that this problem occurs regardless of how much disk space is available on the network server to which you are performing the Administrative installation. Disk space on the workstation from which you are performing the installation is needed for temporary files that are created during Setup.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use any of the following methods:

Method 1: Exit Setup, and move or delete files located on the hard disk

drive of the workstation from which you are running Setup to free
the amount of disk space requested by Setup. Run Setup again.

Method 2: Choose the Change Options button in the dialog box that contains
the error message. This button allows you to select different
          options for the Administrative installation.

If you still want users to run Microsoft Excel from the server, then you will have to choose to install either the Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh version or the Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version, not the version for both of them.

MORE INFORMATION

The following table displays the available disk space required on the workstation from which you perform an administrative installation, depending on the type of installation you select.
