SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you insert an object from a floppy disk drive using the Create From File option in the Insert Object dialog box, and you then remove the floppy disk, you receive the following error message when you insert another object:

System Error

Cannot read from drive "x".

where drive x is either floppy drive A or B
-or-

Under Windows NT, the floppy drive continues to stay on
Additionally, if you cancel this error message, and insert an object using the Create New option in the Insert Object dialog box, you may receive the above error message multiple times, followed by the error message:
Cannot create OLE object
NOTE: Other actions in Microsoft Project may cause the system error message to appear, such as creating a new project.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs after you insert an object located on a floppy disk if you remove the floppy disk before you either change the current directory, or exit Microsoft Project.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods.

Method 1

After you insert the object that is located on the floppy disk, leave the floppy disk in the drive until you either change the current directory in the Insert Object dialog box or you exit Microsoft Project.

Method 2

After you insert the object that is located on the floppy disk, change the current directory in the Insert Object dialog box by doing the following:

  1. From the Insert menu, choose Object.

  2. Choose Cancel in the system error message that appears (Note that you cannot avoid receiving this error message one time in this case.)

  3. Select the Create From File option.

  4. Choose the Browse button. From the Drives list, select the letter of your local hard drive, such as C: and choose OK.

  5. You can now select the Create New option to insert a new object, or the Cancel button to close the Insert Object dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
