GP Fault Applying Bar Shape Formats to Selected Tasks

Q126935

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you use the Bar Shape tab in the Format Bar dialog box to apply bar formatting to selected tasks in the Gantt Chart view, you may receive a general protection (GP) fault.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you exceed the number of tasks that can be directly formatted using the Bar Shape tab (in the Format Bar dialog box) in the Gantt Chart view. This problem only occurs when you apply formatting using the Bar Shape tab in the Format Bar dialog box. Normally, when you apply direct formatting to multiple cells in a table in your project, if you exceed the number of cells that can be directly formatted, you receive the following error message:

You have exceeded the maximum number of cells that can be directly formatted in this view.
When you choose OK, the formatting is not applied to the cells. (Note that the number of cells that you can directly format depends on the view.)

However, when you use the Bar Shape tab in the Format Bar dialog box to format the bar for selected tasks, and you exceed the maximum number of cells that can be directly formatted in the view, you may receive the error message above two times, and then receive the GP fault.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, when you want to format the bar for multiple tasks, use the Bar Styles dialog box whenever possible. The formatting that you apply to tasks using this dialog box is not considered "direct" formatting, and you can format many more tasks at a time using this method.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
