SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Works for Windows when you open and close a Word Processor or Database file without making any changes or saving the file, the date and time of that file is updated.

For example, if a Works Word Processor file dated 3/1/95 at 11:00:00 is opened on 3/15/95 at 12:00:00, then closed one minute later without being saved or modified, the date and time of the file updates to 3/15/95 at 12:01:00.

CAUSE

This behavior is due to a problem in STORAGE.DLL. STORAGE.DLL is used for all reading and writing of OLE 2.0 client documents. When you close a file, STORAGE.DLL updates the file's properties.

MORE INFORMATION

This is not an issue with Microsoft Word version 6.0 or Microsoft Excel version 5.0 for Windows because these programs cache all the file information as soon as the file is opened, and write this information back to the file when it is closed.
